The potato mini-core collection is a subset representing the majority of the genetic diversity contained in the entire potato landrace collection safeguarded by the International Potato Center (CIP) with little genetic redundancy. Mini core collections are generally about 1% of the entire germplasm collection and can be constructed from molecular markers, passport, or evaluation data.
The genebank at the CIP conserves, characterizes, and distributes wild and cultivated potato germplasm. As of June 2019, 4442 accessions of cultivated potato classified as landraces were maintained in the genebank. This collection is a global public good. All materials are distributed to requestors for use in research, training, and breeding upon acceptance of a Standard Material Transfer Agreement (SMTA). Genetic diversity analysis of the potato landrace collection using the SolCAP array provided the basis of information for the identification of 451 diverse accessions for a core collection representing the maximum genetic diversity with little redundancy. After establishing the core collection, a separate analysis was performed to select 45 diverse potato landrace accessions to generate a mini core collection, which corresponds to ~1% of the collection. This mini core collection will allow users to work with a diverse subset for faster evaluation of traits of interest and therefore to ultimately expand research towards identification of additional germplasm from the main landrace collection containing traits of importance. In this subset the 45 most diverse accessions of the potato landrace collection are presented and are available upon request
