Leaf rust (Puccinia triticina) is a major pathogen that can affect wheat, triticale and many other related grasses. A series of near-isogenic lines in a Thatcher background has been used in the USA and Canada to identify leaf rust pathotypes. The hard red spring wheat cultivar Thatcher was the dominant cultivar in the Canadian Prairies from 1939 to the mid-1960s mainly due to its resistance to stem rust and excellent end-use quality.
The disease is found globally, wherever temperate cereals are grown. The alternate hosts are Thalictrum, Isopryum, Anemonella, and Anchusa spp.
