Little millet (Panicum sumatrense Roth ex Roem. & Schult.) is native to India and serves as an important crop for both food and fodder. Of its two races—nana and robusta—the robusta race is characterized by vigorous growth, higher biomass production, and greater grain yield, though it matures later than nana. In a study conducted at ICRISAT, Patancheru, 126 robusta accessions conserved in the ICRISAT Genebank were evaluated over two rainy seasons for their fodder and grain yield potential. The study identified trait-specific sources for high grain yield, high fodder yield, and dual-purpose use (Vetriventhan et al., 2026). From this evaluation, a subset of the top 20 accessions for grain yield was compiled, among which IPmr 896, IPmr 875, IPmr 880, IPmr 871, and IPmr 907 were notable for their dual-purpose potential (grain and biomass).
