The Genetic Resources Research Institute (GeRRI) of the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) has made deliberate efforts to support farmers in Western Kenya in enhancing their sorghum varietal diversity through the use of its germplasm collection.
Under this initiative, the farmers conducted participatory variety selection of genebank materials which enabled them to select 50 farmer preferred ecotypes.
These ecotypes were later evaluated by a total of 511 farmers from Western Kenya through farmer managed trials through which they selected the superior ones, hereby identified as the best bet accessions. This subset forms an important resource that can be used directly by farmers or used in sorghum breeding programmes.
