Through breeding wheat that is both high-yielding and dense in minerals and vitamins -- a process known as biofortification -- HarvestPlus and CIMMYT seek to reduce “hidden hunger”. The largest numbers of people suffering from mineral and vitamin deficiencies live in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
CIMMYT annually distributes improved wheat germplasm through its International Wheat Improvement Network. The materials identified in this subset of materials have elevated levels of zinc concentration in the grain.
