NAS (Nicotianamine Synthase) genes play a vital role in enhancing the bioavailability of iron and zinc in rice grains. These genes synthesize nicotianamine, a metal chelator that facilitates zinc transport within the plant (Nishiyama et al., 2012). Overexpression of NAS genes increases zinc concentration in rice grains and improves its distribution in the endosperm, crucial for dietary zinc bioavailability (Johnson et al., 2011; Kyriacou et al., 2014). Biofortification efforts focus on this trait to address micronutrient deficiencies, or "hidden hunger." The Rice Biodiversity Center for Africa (RBCA) team conducted genotyping of 593 accessions of Oryza spp. using DArTseq-based genotyping by sequencing (GBS) technology. The results allowed them to identify a subset of 381 accessions containing NAS genes that regulate zinc concentration in rice grains. This subset includes 15 accessions of Oryza barthii, 290 of Oryza glaberrima and 76 accessions of Oryza sativa species.
