Remarks
PERSISTENT VARIETY. PBW 343 – CIMMYT line Attila – released by PAU in 1996. It was identified in a year with severe rain when all other material lodged. Rajaram was there and he said nobody could overlook PBW343 since it was the only one standing. Extremely high yield, excellent adaptation and yield stability, at time of release excellent rust resistance (1B/1R) to YR and Stem rust. Was replaced due to YR susceptibility.  Still grown today. PAU has made BC and introgressed YR but new lines/varieties are not better, and PBW343-BC is not popular. Has mediocre quality. Was grown at peak time on more than 7 mlln ha and can still be found on significant area. Sister lines released in Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Turkey, Ethiopia. Hans Braun pers. comm. (2020)
