Seedlings from a randomly selected plant (INPA-197) at the National Research Institute for Amazonia (INPA) at Manaus, Brazil. The population at INPA is generated from a bulk population of 80 accessions introduced into the Pejibaye Active Germplasm Bank (BAG-Pupunha). About 70 to 80% of the population are spineless on both the stem and leaf petiole as a result of selection by the Amerindians.
