Bush beans. Compact plants grow 9-15" tall. Flowers range from light to dark pink. Slightly curved, green pods become yellow as they mature and develop faint red markings. Flat pods become round and have a very long beak. Not recommended as a snap bean
pods are tough and fibrous with a suture string. Mature pods average 3.5" long by 0.6" wide. Shelling (horticultural) beans have a good, smoky flavor that hints of chili beans
thin skin, soft texture. Moderately easy to shell. Leathery podded dry pods contain few seeds (1-3). Kidney-shaped seeds have a white base color with heavy, red-purple marbling. Dry beans have a smoky flavor and meaty texture that holds well during cooking. Mid-season maturing. donated to SSE in 1981 by John Withee of the Wanigan Associates. Withee likely received the variety in the late 1970s
