'Hayany' is one of the most widely cultivated date varieties in lower Egypt. It has a higher moisture content than most date varieties and does not cure readily. It is therefore generally grown as a fresh market date and may appeal to consumers who prefer dates that are less sweet than the norm. 'Hayany' is a high yielding date (under US conditions). However, the fruit is susceptible to damage from rain or high humidity. In Egypt it is often consumed in the khalal stage. Because it can ripen at relatively lower temperatures, fruit picked at the late khalal stage will often soften and become relatively palatable in a few days. (Information mostly from RW Nixon.
