Wild potato species Endosperm Balance Number (EBN)
Due to the importance of wild potato species for interspecific crosses in potato breeding, at of the International Potato Center (CIP) Genebank we estimated the Endosperm Balance Number (EBN) of 129 taxas in custody: species, subspecies, variety, form and typified hybrids.
The CIP Genebank conserves a wild potato species collection at -20ºC in long term storage. This collection maintains 2337 accessions that represent 140 wild potato species classified within the Solanum genus Petota section Solanaceae family, based on (Hawkes,1990; Spooner et al., 2004 & 2014). This diversity is conserved and distributed as a public good under the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA).
The EBN in wild potato species was assessed by interspecific crossability evaluations using a female progenitor from La Plata river basin (Uruguay and Argentina) Solanum commersonii Dunal, a diploid species with EBN=1. The crossability evaluations were carried out at the Santa Ana Huancayo experimental station at 3280 meters of altitude.
The list of S. commersonii accessions utilized in the EBN research of wild potato species was: CIP 761080, CIP 761082, CIP 761084, CIP 761085, CIP 761086, CIP 761087, CIP 761088, CIP 761089, CIP 761090, CIP 761092, CIP 761096, CIP 762556, CIP 761091, CIP 761097, CIP 761098, CIP 761101, CIP 761102, CIP 761103, CIP 761104, CIP 762451, CIP 762452, CIP 762453, CIP 762454, CIP 762455, CIP 762456, CIP 762457, CIP 762458, CIP 762459, CIP 762461, CIP 762462, CIP 762463, CIP 762464, CIP 762465, CIP 762466, CIP 762468, CIP 762469, CIP 762470, CIP 762471, CIP 762473, CIP 762475, CIP 762476.
