Yacon accessions with chromosome number determined
Yacon accessions with chromosome number determined
The chromosome number and ploidy level of 19 accessions from the Yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius) collection of the CIP genbank were determined in meristematic cells of roots sprouted from stem cuttings using an optical microscope. A total of 18 accessions were octoploid (2n=6A+2B=58) and only one accession was dodecaploid (2n=9A+3B=87). It has been proposed that the Yacón has a hybrid origin in which two wild species would be involved, possibly S. riparius and S. macroscyphus. Based on this hypothesis, it can be said that 18 accessions were octoploid (2n=6A+2B=58) and only one accession was dodecaploid (2n=9A+3B=87).
