Characterization of maize accessions in Muguga (Kenya)

Maize accessions were planted in Muguga and assessed for their morphological diversity. The results indicate that the maize accessions held at genebank are variable interms of kernel characteristics, plant height and days to maturity.

  • Ear height

    Mean height of 10 random plant ears from the ground level to the node bearing the upper ear.

  • Days to 50% flowering

    Number of days from planting to when 50% of the plants have extended silk.

  • Mid rib colour

    Midrib colour of the third leaf counted from flag leaf downwards taken during or shortly after flowering.

  • Lodging

    Susceptibility to lodging. Scored before harvesting in a scale similar to percentages.

  • Number of ears per plant

    Average of 10 randomly selected plants from the middle of the plot.

  • Basal tillers

    Average number of basal tillers (without counting the stem)at maturity of 10 randomly selected plants.

  • Ear length

    Mean length of 10 random ears from the point of attachment on the ear peducle to the tip of the dehusked ear.

  • Kernel rows per ear

    Number of rows of kernel on 10 randomly selected ears.

  • Ears characterized

    Number of ears randomly harvested and characterized in the lab.

  • Kernel uniformity

    Visual measurement whether the kernel colours are the same or not.

  • Kernel colour

    Three colours observed in order of frequency.

  • Thousand grain weight

    Weight of one thousand seeds adjusted to 10% moisture content.
