IRRI made a significant contribution to global rice research by publishing the Rice Released Variety Panel (RVP) on Genesys.

The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) made a significant contribution to global rice research by publishing the Rice Released Variety Panel (RVP) on Genesys. This panel consists of over 130 sequenced rice varieties released since 1966 that can be accessed by scientists and breeders worldwide from the International Rice Genebank (IRG).

By making the RVP accessible on Genesys, IRRI enhances the ability of the global rice research community to carry out trait discovery and breeding and thus contributes to developing new rice varieties that can withstand climate challenges and better meet the needs of farmers worldwide.

You can access the Rice Released Variety Panel on Genesys here: Rice Released Variety Panel (RVP).

About the Rice Released Variety Panel

The RVP is a curated set of sequenced rice varieties, predominantly featuring IRRI and Philippines releases, along with improved varieties cultivated in South Asia and Africa. This panel includes notable varieties such as:

  • IR 8: The world's first high-yielding rice variety, which sparked the Green Revolution in Asia.

  • OM 4900: A popular variety in Vietnam.

  • Komboka (IRRI 215): Widely grown in Kenya and Tanzania.

The RVP also features varieties with special traits:

Purpose of the RVP: The panel aims to enhance scientists' awareness of the diversity of improved rice varieties. By providing access to genotypic and phenotypic data on these modern varieties, the RVP bridges the gap between upstream research and practical breeding applications,  accelerating the development of improved new rice with beneficial traits.

Accessing Genotype and Phenotype Data

Genotype Data

Genotypic information for the RVP can be viewed and downloaded from the SNP-Seek database, specifically the following datasets:

These resources provide SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) data essential for genetic analysis and breeding programs.

Phenotype Data

Phenotypic data for some varieties are available on Zenodo, an open-source repository for research data. This data was generated through collaborations between undergraduate interns and their IRRI mentors as part of a research experience program coordinated by Purdue University, supported by the National Science Foundation International Research Experiences for Students (NSF-IRES).

How to Request Seeds

Researchers interested in obtaining seeds of the RVP can do so through Genesys:

  1. Access the RVP List: Visit the Rice Released Variety Panel on Genesys.

  2. Select Accessions: Click 'Add to my list' for the desired varieties.

  3. Request Material: Proceed by clicking on ‘My List’ then 'Request for material' and provide the necessary details.

  4. Complete Requirements:

    • An authorized representative of your organization must agree to the Standard Material Transfer Agreement (SMTA).

    • Provide an import permit and a phytosanitary certificate.

    • Depending on your location, a fee may be required to cover some costs.

  5. Processing Time: The seed request will be processed once all requirements are met.

This step-by-step guide and this detailed explanation of the information you need to fill out in the request form provide more information on how to request material from Genesys. Please contact helpdesk@genesys-pgr.org for support in this process.

Acknowledgments

The development and sequencing of the RVP were made possible through the support of various partners and donors, including:
