The curators of the collections which make up the NPGS put huge effort in maintaining and documenting the material they manage. In a major update to Genesys, made possible by close collaboration between Crop Trust and NPGS staff over a considerable period of time, the most current passport data of accessions in USDA is now in Genesys. That means data on over 580,000 accessions actively maintained by NPGS, as well as some 256,000 historical entries.

USDA accessions are often shared with genebanks around the world. The update of the data in Genesys simplifies discovery, cross-referencing and validation of taxonomic, geographic and other information managed by numerous curators, as well as users. Availability of updated curated records of this large crop diversity resource will improve results of future gap analysis and other research.

USDA accessions January 2021

This update ensures that current accession numbers, taxonomy, coordinates and sites of conservation are valid. All obsolete records were deleted from Genesys.

Additional information will be added to Genesys in follow-up updates, which will henceforward be much more frequent thanks to the efforts of the NPGS team at Beltsville. We are looking forward to receiving collecting site, donor, safety duplication, legal status, plant names, types of storage and other data in the near future.
