Genesys welcomes the largest collection of pearl millet, sorghum, groundnut and pigeonpea in West and Central Africa.
Established in 1991, ICRISAT’s Regional Genebank in Niamey is playing a major role in plant genetic resources conservation and use in West and Central Africa. The genebank conserves the largest collection of pearl millet, sorghum, groundnut and pigeonpea in the region, and makes it available to everyone from researchers to farmers.
It serves as a regional hub, holding thousands of accessions of various crops as safety duplicates from many national genebanks.
It is also engaged in capacity building on plant genetic resources conservation and use throughout the region.
The genebank recently uploaded over 15,000 accessions of sorghum, pearl millet groundnut and pigeonpea in Genesys. Staff say that making data on the collection available through the platform will enhance the use of genetic resources for food security and poverty alleviation in West and Central Africa.
