Institut d'Economie Rurale

The Institute of Rural Economy (IER) is a public institution founded in 1960 as a science and technology institution, and is the principal organization in Mali's national agricultural research system. Its mission includes developing and implementing agricultural research programs, providing technical support for agricultural development, and ensuring the transfer of technological innovations to the rural world. IER’s main areas of expertise are agricultural and livestock production, post-harvest and food technologies, socio-economics, and agricultural economics. Other areas of expertise of IER include forestry and fisheries resources as well as studies on socio-economic impact and evaluation. IER operates Mali’s national genebank called Unit of Genetic Resources (URG, adapted from French: Unité des Ressources Phytogénétiques) that conserves wild relatives and traditional cultivars ex situ. The conservation activities are focused on cereals (sorghum, millet, maize, fonio, irrigated rice, rainfed rice), legumes (sesame, soybean, voandzou, cowpea, groundnut, okra, amaranth, wild watermelon, melon) and a collection of 100 varieties of mango trees. The IER also conducts in situ conservation activities in some regions of Mali.

Il est le principal organisme du système national de recherche agricole du Mali. Il a pour mission d'élaborer et de mettre en œuvre des programmes de recherche agricole, d'apporter un appui technique au développement agricole et d'assurer le transfert des innovations technologiques vers le monde rural. Les principaux domaines d'expertise de l’IER sont la production agricole et animale, les technologies post-récolte et alimentaires, la socio-économie et l'économie agricole. Les autres domaines d'expertise de l'IER comprennent les ressources forestières et halieutiques, ainsi que des études sur l'impact et l'évaluation socio-économiques. L’IER gère la banque de gènes nationale du Mali, qui conserve des accessions d’espèces cultivées et plantes sauvages apparentés ex situ. Les activités de conservation ex-situ de l’IER sont focalisées sur les céréales (Sorgho ; Mil ; Maïs ; Fonio ; Riz irrigué, Riz pluvial), les légumineuses (Sésame ; Soja, Voandzou, Niébé, Arachide, Gombo ; Amarante ; Pastèque Sauvage ; Melon) et une collection de 100 variétés de Manguier. L'IER mène également des activités de conservation in situ dans certaines régions du Mali.

Passport Data Completeness Index (PDCI)
Genesys uses the PDCI as an indicator of the completeness of published passport data. The PDCI uses the presence or absence of data points in the documentation of a genebank accession, taking into account the presence or value of other data points (van Hintum et al. 2011). For example, a wild accession should have a well-defined collection site but no variety name. The PDCI ranges from 0 to 10, where 0 is the minimum score assigned to rather incomplete passport records and 10 is the maximum score assigned to very complete passport records. Any type of accession, wild, landrace, breeding material or modern variety, can attain the PDCI’s maximal score.
